Johan Engström is aiming for a spot at the World Darts Championship in London this year. Twelve events will determine his faith.
After two seasons outside of the top 10 on the Nordic and Baltic ranking, Johan Engström was marginally close to secure himself a spot at the World Darts Championship last season. However due to a good run from Darius Labanauskas at the 10th and final Nordic and Baltic Pro Tour event last season, at which the Lithuanian went all the way and took the title, Johan Engström came up short and found himself as number three on the rankings.
“It was very hard, because it was so close. But Darius was stronger this time,” Johan Engström tells pdc-nordic.tv.
Still the season of 2024 was quite good for the ‘Sweet Ferret’ who qualified for no less than three European Tours and came 3rd on the Nordic and Baltic rankings as mentioned. But this year he wants even more.
“This year I am going all in. I am going for the spot at Ally Pally.”
With twelve Nordic and Baltic Pro Tour events this season, Johan Engström will have to continue his good form from 2024. But with a lot of good Swedish dart players in his home area, he feels like it can be done, as he faces them often in both training and Swedish tournaments.
“We have a lot of super stars in Stockholm. Meaning you have to play at your absolute best all the time and have to be focused continuously.”
With the introduction of the Jann Hoffmann Trophy, Johan Engström also have another goal for this season, as he wants to qualify for the non-ranking season finale.
“It is a really good thing with this new tournament. And hopefully I will qualify for it. I am really looking forward to that tournament and the whole season in general.”
The new season will start this weekend in Latvia, as the two first Nordic and Baltic Pro Tour events will be on the program alongside three European Qualifiers, with two of them at Friday.
