Tonight it will be decided whether Michael van Gerwen or Peter Wright can call themselves World Darts Champion in 2020.
It’s January 1st, so it’s time to find the next world champion of darts. Tonight’s match is between Michael van Gerwen and Peter Wright.
Michael van Gerwen has won the tournament three times in the past, and can win for the fourth time if he wins tonight. Peter Wright, on the other hand, has never been a World Championship before, although he had the chance in 2014 when he was up against the same Michael van Gerwen. Here, however, he lost 7-4 to the somewhat younger Dutchman.
Ahead of the final Peter Wright has told pdc.tv: “I wasn’t ready to be World Champion before but I am now. I’m not going to throw it away this time. I’ve matured over all these years and I am ready now. My previous record in finals doesn’t matter – this is my time.”
“Michael hasn’t impressed me in this tournament and I think I’ve played better than him,” added Wright.
“I have kept my focus and got better with every game and I believe I can do anything I want.
“I knew I was going to make the final and had a set of trousers laid out for every round. I told him before we got here that I would see him in the final and beat him – and that is what is going to happen.”
Michael van Gerwen, however, is also quite confident ahead of the final. Actually he thinks, that Peter Wright is scared of him.
“Every time I had to play well in this tournament I did it, so I can’t really complain about how I played,” Michael van Gerwen told pdc.tv.
“I had too many bad scores and I know I can do better, so I will have to improve that for the final.
“Most of the time Peter plays me he blows up and misses darts at double and that’s a good thing for myself. I hope I can play a bit better than I have been doing so far in this tournament and I’m looking forward to the final.
“I think he’s more scared of me than I am of him.”
The match can be seen on pdc.tv from 20.15.
