Yesterday Joe Cullen won the European Darts Matchplay. It was his first ever European title.
The field for the last day of the European Darts Matchplay was full of big names. None the less, it was Joe Cullen, who had never before won a European title, who took the title with a win against Michael van Gerwen in the final.
In the third round Joe Cullen won 6-3 against William O’Connor, even though he was down by 2-0.
In the quarter-final he was up against Glen Durrant. The three time BDO World Champion was no problem for Cullen, who won the match by 6-2.
In the semi-final James Wade awaited, and it ended up being a close match. James Wade was only in front at one point, as he got himself up on 2-1, but other than that, the match was close. But at 5-5 Joe Cullen secured himself the next two legs and won the match by 7-5.
Michael van Gerwen, who was the opponent in the final, had looked good throughout the day, as he had beaten Mensur Suljovic, Krzysztof Ratajski and Dave Chisnall to reach the final. Dave Chisnall was demolished by 7-1 in the semi-final.
Joe Cullen none the less, had no fear in the final, and even got up by 4-1. Michael van Gerwen crawled back into the match and got up on 5-5, before Joe Cullen took three legs in a row and secured his first ever European title by 8-5.
