Andreas Hyllgaardhus is currently in the pole position to represent the Danish team alongside Benjamin Rees at the World Cup of Darts and wants to secure the spot this weekend.
If you were to mention the name Andreas Hyllgaardhus last year, not many would be recognizing the name. However the Dane has made a name for himself this season on the Nordic and Baltic Pro Tour, and is currently number nine on the Nordic and Baltic rankings.
“I participated at the first two weekends last year but did not feel I got the results at all, even though my game was okay. I definitely think my lack of experience played a part in that. As I have been matched against the best players in Denmark more and more often, and my desire to beat them have increased, my level has just gotten better and better. As long as I can optimize some things so I can perform better, I will do it,” tells pic-nordic.tv.
“Before the season I never thought I would be the best Dane on the rankings this season. My goal before the season started was to be within top 24, so I would qualify for the Jann Hoffmann Trophy. As the season has progressed my new goal is to finish as at least number nine which is my current position.”
Besides being number nine in the rankings of this season, the Dane is also in pole position for the second spot on the Danish team for the World Cup of Darts alongside Benjamin Reus. And with this weekend in Finland as the last before the cut-off, Andreas Hyllgaardhus is reaching for the ticket.
“I am much aware of my favorable position regarding the World Cup, but there is not much separating me from both Ivan Springborg, but also Jonas Graversen and Simon Bak, and Niels Heinsøe is also still in the picture. I am absolutely certain that I have what it takes. The last few weeks I have really hit a high level both in training and in matches, and I can feel my development is not over yet. My focus will be 100 precent on my own performance this weekend. I have absolutely no direct impact on whether the others do well or poorly, unless I am drawn against them.”
“The biggest goal for the weekend is to qualify for the World Cup, but beyond that I really feel like I have the level to go even further, than I have done earlier in the season. I really want to play with those in the top 8.”
For Andreas Hyllgaardhus it would mean a lot to represent the Danish team.
“It would be huge to represent Denmark. One of my first experiences watching the darts was the World Cup when Jann Hoffmann and Per Laursen were partners, and I think the format of playing together is really cool. The format also gives smaller nations a chance against the established countries. I would be really honored to be able to pull a Danish national team jersey over my head, and I really hope that it will happen, sooner or later.”
The weekend in Finland starts with two European qualifiers at Friday, with the first of the two to start at 14:00 local time.
