The Players Championship Finals last day stands before us and some amazing quarter-finals await.
Yesterday, 32 players were made into eight as both the second and third round were played yesterday. The highlight of the second round was Michael van Gerwen, who in the match against Adrian Lewis, managed to make the first televised nine-darter of the year.
Unfortunately Darius Labanauskas lost 6-5 against Ryan Meikle in the second round.
In the third round, no nine-darters were made, however, the averages went through the roof. Stephen Bunting averaged 107.03 in his 10-2 win against Ryan Meikle. Gerwyn Price averaged 101.88 when beating Mensur Suljovic. Michael van Gerwen averaged 105.46 when he beat James Wade, who even averaged 102.01.
Ian White averaged crazy 107.46 when he won against Michael Smith, and last, Mervyn King averaged 105.09 when he beat Rob Cross.
Raymond van Barneveld also continued his little adventure as he is also in today’s field after beating Glen Durrant 10-4 in yesterday’s third round.
But as mentioned, it all has to be decided today, and it starts with the quarter-finals this afternoon. Here, Gerwyn Price will first face Stephen Bunting. After Bunting’s impressive performance yesterday, you can hardly say that Price will certainly move on here. If Bunting can make yet another performance of that caliber, it may well be difficult for the Welshman.
In the second quarter-final Raymond van Barneveld will face Chris Dobey. Looking at the overall season, it was probably the few who expected Raymond van Barneveld to still be in the tournament. Nevertheless, the Dutchman has delivered some pretty good performances so far, while Chris Dobey has not gone off with some completely insane averages. It could well be a close match.
Michael van Gerwen then goes up against Mervyn King. Mervyn King proved yesterday that you can’t just get past him. If Mervyn King has found the right darts today, then Michael van Gerwen will probably have to fight to the last.
In the last quarter-final Ian White will face William O’Connor. The Englishman, who really made his name last year, especially on the European Tour, looks like a little favorite in this show. Ian White has also won the last three matches, but if you look at the overall standings, it is actually 4-4 between the two players. The match thus seems to be quite open.
In addition, the final of the PDC World Youth Championship will also be played today. The match between Adam Gawlas and Luke Humphries will be played between the two semi-finals and the final.
As always, you can follow all of today’s matches on pdc.tv from 13.45 and 20:00. Below you can get an overview of the program today and the results from yesterday.
